A memoir, a love story and more…
Dynasty Disrupted is a richly evocative memoir steeped in wooden boat history, seen through the eyes of a young boy growing up in the 1950s and ’60s within the legendary Halvorsen boating family.
Born into a proud dynasty of master boat builders and sailors, Anders Halvorsen seemed destined to follow in their wake—until a tragic, life-altering accident changed everything.
At just 22, Anders’ life was abruptly transformed when a devastating accident left him paraplegic. With raw honesty and disarming vulnerability, he recounts the profound highs and lows of living with paraplegia for more than five decades. His story traces the loss of all he once knew and loved, and the long, difficult journey toward acceptance, rediscovery, and purpose.
Yet this is not simply a story of loss.
Woven through Anders’ life is a resilient faith—one inherited from generations before him—that endures through suffering, disappointment, and uncertainty. It is a faith that anchors him, reshapes his path, and ultimately points him toward a future marked not by despair, but by hope.

Meet the Authors:
Anders and Julie Anne Halvorsen
Welcome!
For many years I have been asked to tell about my life. Why would it be worthy of the telling? Well, it took a huge turn when at age 22 I was injured in a motorcycle crash. To say my life was interesting pre injury is an understatement. But then after, what had to many, looked a trainwreck, actually became quite the adventure.
If you are one who enjoys life stories, albeit, it is merely a personal family story, this book is for you. I tell of my life from birth to now and joining me to tell the story is my life partner and wife Julie Anne! She tells of times that will both cause you to laugh and cry as the raw truth of living with disability for over 50 years unfolds.
Even I find myself a little surprised and dare I say, inspired by my journey. I hope you will be too!
My greatest hope of all is that you will consider the spiritual aspect of life. My faith has been a bedrock to my life. It is woven throughout, in both the good, bad and miraculous parts of story.
For those who might be on a journey where your life has been disrupted, my hope is that this will encourage you and those who also find themselves affected. This book is not the end, but the beginning of sharing our lives. I hope we will be an encouragement for those who take the time to read this, our first effort into the literary world! ~Anders

It is more than 50 years ago when I first met Anders as he lay in a bed in the spinal unit at Royal North Shore Hospital. Anders was to 'trade in' his 2 wheels for 4 – a wheelchair. We were both in our twenties. I am in awe of how Anders has gotten on with life. I have found out that he gained strength from a higher source.
After the early days I lost contact with Anders for a while, however I was reliably informed by my then colleague, Dr John Yeo, that Anders and Julie had married and miraculously he fathered children. It was later in 2004 when we met up again regularly when Anders joined the Board of ParaQuad NSW (now Forward Ability Support) to further his voluntary contribution to the community. He was rapidly elected Chairman and continued in that role until his retirement in 2025.
Honestly I don’t know how he continued to travel monthly to Sydney from his home in Northern NSW for so long to attend the Board meetings. It is not easy to travel as a person with paraplegia. He dealt with constant pain and other problems, besides the obvious, his need for a wheelchair. He has not even resigned himself to the use of a motorised wheelchair after more than 50 years of using his arms “for his legs”.
Anders is truly a remarkable man and it is patients like Anders who inspired me to continue working as a spinal cord injury doctor all these years. It has been a great privilege to share the journey with Anders and Julie over these five-plus decades.

I have always admired, and never ceased to be inspired by Anders and the remarkable faith he has carried throughout the many years I have known him. Despite the tragic accident he suffered at just 22 years of age, he has consistently demonstrated unwavering trust in God, resilience, and an uplifting spirit.
His positive outlook has deeply influenced his children, all of whom now serve God and their communities in meaningful and powerful ways. While many allow disappointment to turn into cynicism, Anders chose the path of faith, courageously overcoming both the inner and outer challenges of life in a wheelchair.
I am confident his book will inspire every reader to live a strong, purposeful, and effective life, regardless of the obstacles they may face. I will gladly be recommending this outstanding and inspiring story to many others.

Anders Halvorsen OAM has been a member of Forward Ability Support and BrightSky Australia for 52 years and served as a director on the organisation’s Board for 21 years, including 12 years as Chair.
I first met Anders and his wife Julie when I joined the organisation 5 years ago and from the beginning I was struck by Anders' dedication, commitment, and quiet guidance.
Anders humility, wisdom, and willingness to always show up, whether in person or remotely while travelling has set a powerful example of value-led leadership. His contribution and willingness to share his experience with raw honesty has shaped who we are today.
This book is about strength and resilience and is a fitting tribute to Anders’ extraordinary contribution as a Director, Chair, Life Member, and long-standing member of our community. I am truly grateful to know Anders. His service and his positive impact, alongside Julies, will be felt for many years to come.
